Let’s Chat About Churches
Churches are amongst the most fascinating buildings in the world, and on this walk Sarah Brierley will introduce you to some of the most majestic examples in the City of London, including some of the many churches designed by Sir Christopher Wren and his team after the Great Fire of London, as well as a church that has been in continuous use for over 900 years.
Hear tales of the martyrdom of Saints who gave the churches their names, and discover
some truly rare gems – the medieval churches that survived not only the Reformation, but the Great Fire, and the Blitz bombings of WW2 as well.
Find out how churches have connected to the lives of ordinary Londoners. From their roots in
medieval times when they were the true lifeblood of their parish (you could be fined if you didn’t attend), to a monumental event in the 1500s when England’s religion changed totally on the whim of one man, right up to the present day and the way churches have adapted to modern life in a city where commuters far outnumber permanent inhabitants.
