Playwrights, Palaces, Prostitutes and Piracy – A Walk Around Southwark

A walk with  Caroline Powell

Learn more about the fascinating history of this area- once outside the jurisdiction of the Great and Good of the City of London and all the more interesting because of that! Discover more about the Pool of London, the shipwrights, lightermen and watermen. Delve into the behaviour of the bishop of Winchester, his Winchester Geese, Sir Francis Drake and the inmates of the Clink Prison. Consider where old meets new as we spot the Shard towering above Southwark Cathedral. Drink in the history of the Anchor Brewery and the Hop Exchange. Revisit the site of the Tabard Inn where Chaucer’s pilgrims set off to Canterbury- this area offers something for everyone!

The walk starts at the Jimmy C art installation inside London Bridge Mainline Station entitled Meet at the heart of the Matter.

If you fancy some more drama, visit Shakespeare’s Globe.
