Brutalism – has its timeBarbican 05 come?
by Courtney Plank
Brutalism often seems to be in the news lately – including a recent exhibition in Glasgow. In the City of course we have our own masterpiece of this increasingly in-favour style, namely the Barbican estate. And did you know that behind the fortress like construction lies a medieval church, remnants of the London Wall, as well as greenery, culture, water and calm?
Commentators now point out the durability of concrete design in an increasingly disposable world, as well as appreciating the contrast to the steel and glass so prevalent in the rest of the City. This is a tactile material – and on a vast scale!
Join us for a walk around the Barbican and Golden Lane estate in The Barbican – What’s not to love? on 11th October
