The Humble Grape, Fleet Street must be one of the most well-hidden restaurants in the city. For a start it’s not actually in Fleet Street. Situated just of the junction of Fleet Street and Ludgate Circus, a turn into Bride Lane will bring you to narrow St Bride’s Passage. Step through the arched gate in the wall, and you’ll be stepping into part of the crypt of St Bride’s Church which has been transformed into a quirky cosy wine bar/kitchen/wine shop.

Yes, you could choose from 400 artisan wines, you could turn up to a wine tasting, you could throw a party in one of several private dining spaces, you could even bring your pooch (it’s a dog-friendly place) or, you could just do as we did, and have lunch.

The Humble Grape’s menus are based on British cuisine, and as we were keen to get back to our Fleet Street ramblings, we went for the Express Menu. Starters included Crispy Cauliflower with lime aioli and chilli ketchup, and Herb Cured Salmon with lemon crème fraiche and dill oil.

The main course choices included Seared Sea Bass with fregula and salsa verde, Grilled Chicken Caesar salad or Spiced Cauliflower Steak with almond cream and kale. For dessert we chose from Strawberry Pavlova, Lemon Peel Madeleines, and ice cream.

Not only tasty and served quickly but reasonably priced too at £19 for two courses and £22 for three. A great little place to get cosy in on a wintry day.
